Okay grant it we've all heard this saying 'the pen is mightier than the sword' right?  Well, what the heck does it mean?

From doing a little research I found it was first written as part of a play in the 1800's and, essentially it dealt with the idea of communication surpassing violence in efficacy.

Huh?sw tactical pen

I know right?

In other words, it meant words written on paper could be far more cutting and powerful than weapons.

Now mind you this whole thought processed of looking up the phrase in the first place stemmed from me sitting in a 'home- intrusion seminar' hearing that a simple writing pen, not the words it writes on paper, could be mightier than the sword too. And in the normal course of things my mind started wandering and I began to wonder who came up with such a phrase … ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’ in the first place?

As my mind came back down to earth, the instructor was pointing out that while a simple cheap plastic pen may look non-threatening, it could actually double as a self-defense weapon in a crisis situation, inflicting serious injury with proper thrust and placement.

He discussed the specific spots on the body to target with a pen; like the upper arms and legs that have a lot of fatty tissue or muscle and how if punched through the skin could cause a lot of disabling damage. And, unlike other forms of physical defense movements, you avoid the bony parts of the body because if you were it hit a bony part, say like the face, forearms and chest it would likely do nothing more than break the skin.  Instead, he said to go right for the neck, biceps, and abdominal area.

After this seminar and hearing what was said, I made it a point of having a pen with me at all times. With the handy-dandy pocket clip it could be attached to anything I’m wearing whether jeans or dress clothes.

Some time later I hear someone mentioned a tactical pen. Tactical pen??? My ears perk up. ‘What like a pen for SWAT teams?” I snorted.  And the answer, in a round about way, was yes.

It seems the writing pen concept as a form of self defense was taken a step further and turned into a viable asset. A writing instrument made specifically for self defense and practical use combined.

Its one of the best "hidden in plain site" self defense methods to carry - especially for ladies who aren’t yet comfortable with the whole gun carrying thing.

So I start looking into these little “Get Smart” pens and happened on the Smith & Wesson Survival Tactical Pen in all its glory. This had my name written all over it.  I mean, first of all anything with survival attached to it gets my attention right away after all that is my mission right?  But it comes in this awesome burn orangey color that is so in right now (also in grey and black … but borrrring), AND it has a fire starter built right in it!  A fire starter in a pen! Whodda thunk?

Now anyone that knows me knows that I love things that have multiple uses. This thing can write, start a fire, break a window in an emergency and … put a hurtin’ on someone if you were put in a life-threatening situation.  Not only is the pen itself sturdy: made of aircraft aluminum casting, but the ball-point is not too shabby either.  On the end of the pen where the pocket clip is located is a black ribbed pointy cap – this cap can be used as a glass breaker.

And if that wasn’t enough, twist the pen apart and you’ll see a black rod (called a ferro rod) the rod when used in conjunction with the glass breaking cap will actually spark to create a fire! Fiiiii yahhhh! It’s awesome! This pen can actually save your life!!!

Now you see what I mean about multi uses huh?  How many things did I say? Five? Let’s see uh, writing utensil, fire starter, glass breaker, self defense device and oh yeah, an awesome accessory!  Score!

Hmmm, so I guess all in all, the pen ‘is’ mightier than the sword, the S&W Survival Tactical Pen that is!

Oh and just so you know, it can put a hurtin’ on a watermelon too! What? That’s all I had to practice on!
