And so it’s begins … a new season of National Geographic Channel’s hit TV series, Doomsday Preppers - premiering Thursday, July 24th at 9pmET.
I must admit I was as giddy as a kid on Christmas morning, eager to preview episode 1, to see how close Nat Geo would actually get to “back to the basics”, understanding of course that a show without a little tongue-and-cheek humor and peppered with a little sensationalism, well just wouldn’t be in keeping with the show’s format. Just sayin’.
The Doomsday Preppers featured on the show are supposed to be ordinary Americans preparing for their personal “end of the world as they know it”. The issue I have here is ordinary. Preppers are not ordinary. And neither are the people that are featured on the show. And we’re not normal either. What I mean is, most normal people are oblivious to what is going on around them. But preparedness is not a one size fits all. There are different strokes for different folks …even in prepping.
As is customary from previous seasons, three preppers, some single, some should be, are featured on each episode.
First up this season is Jimi Falcon. He is prepping for a potential World War III. Jimi lives by himself in the extreme climates of the Montana Mountains where he cohabits with his two cats – preppers in training.
Next, is Cindy Stewart, who began prepping her family for a foreign nuclear attack on the U.S. following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. She and her husband quit their jobs and moved with their young son to a more rural landscape. Due to the isolation of their property, the family practices evade and escape tactics and firearm drills. She also created a unique perimeter defense by using her taxidermy skills to camouflaged IEDs.
Lastly, is Rod Godfrey, who is concerned with our ever increasing volatile weather patterns and the potential of apocalyptic super storms, the likes we’ve never seen. He is an ex-military communications specialist who has used his past training to create a military-style command and control center in his home enlisting the help of friends and neighbors to monitor storm systems.
True to form, during this episode there were preppers featured who appeared to have a no-holds barred when it came to their preps by blatantly showing them for all to see; including food and self-protection. Maybe some of these preppers just felt they had to show “everything” because they were asked to? To me, it made me cringe each time I saw a reveal. But that’s just me.
As for back to basics, I guess I’d have to say, Jimi would be the closest featured prepper on the show to actually be living back to basics by using a water catchment system, preserving meats and using a wood stove. The others, well … not so much.
